Ohio roads.

Posted by RydiaLockheart Jun. 20, 2008 @ 9:59 PM EDT

I moved to Ohio at the beginning of the month (more specifically, southeast of Columbus). This is a nice area and all, but...what's up with the roads? Seriously. It's like I'm driving on the surface of the moon or something. What worries me is Ohio doesn't have mandatory car inspections like Pennsylvania, so I might not know what's gonna go wrong until it's too late. Just this past February, I had to have an inspection and it turned out I needed a bunch of stuff replaced. I should be okay there for a bit. But I'll probably go to a garage next February and spring for a diagnostic check to be sure. I mean, I do have a used car.

I might have just written it off as a regional thing if the roads weren't the same way up around Lake Erie. I have a friend who lives in Ashtabula County. Whenever I crossed the state line, the road quality noticably changed. On the Pennsylvania side, it was nice and paved (though it was redone a few years ago on that spot). When I crossed to Ohio...BUMPBUMPBUMPBUMPBUMP. It's nothing that would mess up a car, but it makes me wonder. What DOES Ohio do with tax money? I know where some of it goes, at least. Lots of stuff benefits schools, for example.

Also, I see a lot of shitty cars in Ohio that would never pass a Pennsylvania inspection. Rust spots=instant fail. I had to paint over a spot on my car to pass. Some cars just have natural rust spots that come with time, while others are total rustbuckets. No wonder there's a junker industry in this county. At the same time, though, if it runs and doesn't blow up or whatever, I see why someone would want to keep it. Just today, I saw someone with the license "ITLLRUN." Funny thing was, it was a fairly new car and not a junker.
